Treatment Plan

Galls can be present in a wide range of severity, from a few to hundreds per leaf. Injury from a few to several galls per leaf is usually considered “cosmetic” not requiring control. Cornell notes that some varieties can withstand extensive galling. In our experience, severe infestations that greatly reduce leaf area likely have an effect on vine productivity (although we are not aware of research confirming this). Where needed, the key to effective control is beginning applications early in the season (typically 1-2 weeks prior to bloom in western NY) when the crawler stage is active. Apply Assail 30 SG (East of Rocky Mountains only) at 2.5 to 5.3 oz per acre when galls first appear. Do not use more than once every 14 days, do not make more than 2 applications per season. Maximum seasonal rate is 10.6 oz. Do not use spray adjuvants with Assail. 3 day PHI, 12 hr REI. Apply Movento at 6.25 fl oz per acre when galls first appear and repeat a minimum of 30 days later (maximum seasonal rate is 12.5 fl oz). 7 day PHI, 24 hr REI. Must be applied with a penetrating surfactant such as (LI 700 or) Sure-Spred.
