Excessive Nitrogen
Treatment Plan
Vineyard nitrogen status is typically determined by visual observations of canopy fill and leaf color. Excessive nitrogen is associated with lush green leaf color, long internodes, and excessive vegetative growth. The fruiting zone may be excessively shaded, leading to poor fruit quality and poor bud fruitfulness the following season, and the vines may continue shoot growth after veraison which can lead to poor shoot/cane maturation and higher susceptibility to winter injury.
If nitrogen is excess reduce or eliminate nitrogen fertilization, or encourage cover crop growth to utilize residual nitrogen in the soil.
Bloom petiole sampling can be used to verify nitrogen deficiency if needed – contact our office if nitrogen analysis is desired for bloom petiole samples as this is not included with our typical petiole analysis and requires an additional fee.
